Overview
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has proposed improvements to Loop 1604 from FM 78 to I-10 East in Bexar County. The purpose of the condemnation project is to improve operations and relieve congestion from Fm 78 to I-10 East, provide a long-term solution to FM 78 congestion, and provide continuous movement along Loop 1604. The current estimated construction cost is $300 million.
Proposed improvements
- Upgrading Loop 1604 to a controlled-access expressway to include construction of ramps to connect mainlanes and frontage roads
- Constructing bridge overpasses and at-grade U-turns at all intersections
- Building an elevated U-turn from southbound mainlanes to the northbound frontage road near Randolph AFB
- Constructing additional at-grade U-turns near Randolph AFB
- Building continuous frontage roads
- Reconfiguring the Lower Seguin Road intersection at Loop 1604
Project Timeline
- 2021 to 2025 – Right-of-way acquisition, design, and utility relocation
- 2025 – Construction (if funding is available)
- 2029 – Lanes open
